This year’s African Studies Summer Institute will examine some of the successes and challenges of democracy in post-colonial Africa. Yale faculty and other experts in African history, politics and economics will help to build the historical foundation necessary to understand the complex internal and global forces affecting contemporary Africa. Through lectures, films, and discussions, participants will explore a variety of historical landmarks in Africa’s democratic experiments. Sessions will include broad overviews of historical developments, individual case studies of nations such as Sudan, South Africa, Tunisia and the Ivory Coast, and curriculum-development workshops. Join us as we move beyond simplistic portrayals of Africa to discover the substantive and provocative realities.
