International Development: Focus on South Africa

July 6-12, 2006

The Millennium Development Goals have spurred the international community to focus efforts in meeting the needs of the world’s poorest through an expanded vision of sustainable development. Participants will be introduced to political, economic, social and cultural issues facing developing countries within a contemporary context. The country focus of this year’s program will be on South Africa. South Africa is critical to US foreign policy interests and is one of the richest and economically most important countries of Africa. Despite its gains, South Africa still faces huge challenges of stark poverty and inequality resulting from its apartheid legacy.
