Curious about Cairo? Tehran? Istanbul? Tel Aviv? Spend a week this summer on a virtual journey through the great cities of the Middle East, North Africa, and Central Asia. Through the eyes of archaeologists, historians, architects, geographers, and more, see how urban life in the crossroads of civilizations has impacted the world in both distant and modern times. Sociologists, anthropologists, political scientists, urban planners, and economists will show how political events and social changes have been indelibly mapped onto these cities’ dynamic landscapes. Learn how new visions of urban space may impact social, economic, and political outcomes in the region and beyond. A tour of relevant sites in New York City will form an integral part of the institute. Tuition for the New Haven program is $150, and includes texts and materials. An optional field study to Istanbul, Turkey will follow the institute (tuition estimated at $2,500).
