Since its launch in 2007, Open Yale Courses (OYC) has provided free online access to archived versions of popular Yale College classes to hundreds of thousands of people from nearly every country in the world. The initiative, sponsored through generous funding from the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation, allows anyone with Internet access and the desire to learn the opportunity to effectively audit Yales most popular undergraduate courses in the sciences, arts, and humanities. The OYC websiteoffers a rich learning environment that includes video, audio and searchable transcript versions of every course lecture as it was presented in the classroom to Yale students. The lectures are enriched by class syllabi, reading assignments, problem sets and other learning materials. Most of the content is licensed under a Creative Commons license, which allows users to download and redistribute the Open Yale Courses material, as well as remix and build upon the content to produce new lectures or other educational resources. In 2009, OYC media became available on the popular public platforms YouTube and iTunes, in an effort to ensure the broadest and most accessible distribution of these materials.
