PIER-East Asian Studies, established in 1974, works to strengthen the understanding of East Asia – China, Japan, and Korea. PIER-East Asian Studies has two primary goals: 1. to facilitate and enhance learning and teaching about East Asia for K-12 and college teachers, educators, and media specialists,and 2. to engage in educational programs with business and media that will enhance international and intercultural understanding.
PIER-East Asian Studies has provided intensive summer institute, travel and field study opportunities in East Asia, professional development workshops, on-site training programs, on-line lesson plans, and resource clearinghouse services.
Originally funded as part of the Council on East Asian Studies United States Department of Education Title VI National Resource Center, the program is now supported by the Council on East Asian Studies and through various grants and initiatives.
